Mama Bird Pocket Diapers

First off.. I have showed the Phish socks who's boss and I've rocked BOTH heels and started up the cuffs. and they are now officially know as the Phish socks b/c I have had Phish stuck in my head for DAYS now!!! make it stop!!!!

Anyway.. Mama Bird... Click the title to go to her page with the patterns and the instructions for the AIO and fitteds. I made 2 pockets using her "little" pattern. (Note: pictures to be added once I figure out how to upload my new camera onto the old computer)

To Make Pockets:

Materials:
  • Procare or PUL for cover ( I used Procare with cotton overlay after MUCH convincing of the big brothers that it was SCRAP fabric, NOT their curtains!!!)
  • fleece, micro fleece, or seuadecloth for lining (I used fleece - more scraps!)
  • lastin (more scraps! I used 3 5" pieces)
  • velcro
  • mama bird pattern and big paper to trace it on.

Directions:

  • print pattern and tape together as instructed.
  • trace 2 copies onto pattern paper adding an extra 1/4" seam allowance.
  • move marks for elastic to edge of original pattern. the elastics will actually be sewn into the seam allowance!
  • cut one pattern out along the AIO line. mark this one as the Lining.
  • cut the other along the fitted line. mark this as the Cover.
  • yes - I know that the prev. 2 steps are OPPOSITE of the AIO directions, but go with me on this!
  • cut out your fabrics (fleece with lining pattern and your barrier fabric and optional overlay from the cover pattern.
  • transfer markings.
  • Sew lastin at edge of fabric on ws of cover between back markings. I start at one end and keep the lastin taught unitl I get to the other end and cut off excess. (I used my serger for this, but you could zig zag it too. optional- repeat with lining.
  • since I used an overlay, I serged the overlay to the barrier all the way arround being sure to keep elastic taight. I didn't trim much of anything off of hte edges, just a hair.
  • sew loop tape to front of cover.
  • lay lining on the RS of cover. Use clothespins or binder clips to hold the 2 together (pins=holes=leaks!) be sure to line up the edges. YES the fleece is wider in the crotch. it is SUPPOSED to be!
  • serge (or overlock or zigzag) around the edge. start at one end of the pocket and sew around to the other end.
  • now, sew the lastin to the FLEECE side of the leg openings at markings. I used the same procedure as for the back elastic.
  • turn RS out.
  • top stitch SA on the pocket opening. do NOT top stitch the rest of the diaper.
  • you'll notice that the fleece will roll out at the leg. this is what it should do! this is softer on baby and helps prevent wicking.
  • sew velcro onto tabs. add crossover tab if you like.
  • prewash & dry in dryer to reseal barrier fabric.
  • stuff and put on baby!

Rocked the Short Row Heel

.. just in time for it to kick my ASS!!! It was so perfect! except for one little detail.. I started it about an inch too soon! my first toe-up heel - I guessed wrong.

I got yarn samples in the mail on Monday for Squirt's christening gown.. and I'm ordering it! YAY!!! it is SO lucious! Even Todd was wowed by it.. and he only cares about yarn when it is knit into socks for HIM... oh - the yarn.. 50/50 merino/silk!!! 1# laceweight for the gown and 1# DK for the blanket.

I've got a question for any veg/vegans reading this... what are your thoughts on animal fibers like wool, cashmere, silk, angora etc. I mean, the animals like to be sheared and/or plucked! and the fibers are SO nice to wear and to work with!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEAR!

Today, Andy is 5! a whole hand! I can hardly believe it! It seems like yesterday he was born...and now we are signing him up for Kindergarten. KINDERGARTEN!!!

We had his party with his friends on Saturday. All week, the weather kept looking worse and worse.. I was in a cleaning frenzy! cleaning, unpacking and organizing my house from top to bottom! by Satuday morning, I was on the verge of complete physical and mental collapse... I was rescued by the Grandmas ans Amanda who help set up and decorate for the party. I think God realized that I'd had quite enough and the rain stopped in the morning. Todd and his Dad set up the bouncer. the sun came out! SO after all of my cleaning, we ended up having the party outside... as soon as it was over, the clouds came back. we took the bouncer down. it started to sprinkle again. Thank you God for listening to me! I was SO wiped from the whole experinece that I was in my PJs in bed on a saturday night - and it was still light out! and you know what? I was GLAD!

To make my weekend even better, I got to sleep in to 9 on "Saint Mudders Day"! and parked my arse in front of the TV knitting most of the day! (making GREAT progress on FISH! started my first Short Row heel!).

at least my house looks good! It got pretty muddy after the party, but no biggie! Dad also installed the chandalier over the dining table adn the track light over the bar. I love Ikea! I like the kitchen light SO much, we're thinking of forgoing the ceiling fan and getting a matching chandalier for the entry. pics to follow...

I did this too....

you must get this book! I'll even sing it for you! My FIRST (of hopefully many!) published pattern! Word on the street (ok- in a Canadian yarn shop.) is that it ROCKS! I just want to stay off of What Not To Crochet. or at least take it gracefully... I'd love to be like the Yarn Harlot some day.

I'll do it myself

I'm not sure if it is gentic or a product of how I was raised, but it seems that members of my family - and I'm talking like even second and third cousins here - have a need and a talent for making things. A common phrase in the family is "I can make that." Perhaps that is why so many of us are engineers, contractors, mechanics, and generally creators of something. It is a talent created by necesity I believe, but has continued through the generations out of frugality and sensibilty. and perhaps there is more than just the "look what I made" aspect. there is the joy and relaxation of process. There is the connection to my family as I knit with my grandmothers needles (and finish a project she bagan 30 years ago!) or as I make my homemade bread in my great-grandmothers bread bucket and yes family, it IS just like my grandmother's!)

My great-great grandmothers knit socks for their families because there was no Walmart (not such a bad thing...) and no other way to keep their feet warm. I knit socks for my family, but not because they are cheaper or easier, but because I enjoy the process and I enjoy giving of my self to those I love. and, well, if you've ever worn a pair of socks that were hand knit just for your feet... you wouldn't ask me why I spend $15 on yarn for a pair of socks when I can pick up 6 pairs for $5.

All is not socks tho. I sewed the curtains for my house because the fabric was MUCH cheaper than buying them premade and let's face it, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to sew a rectangle! I knit winter hats and mittens for my boys because appearantly, you can not buy either in sizes that fit children between the ages of 2 and 8! my boys are big guys, but not that big!

Although Todd appreciates and understands my need to make things (especially if they are for him) he is just beginning to understand the self satisfaction of making it yourself. my boys, however, have either inherited the gene form me, or I've already got them brainwashed. Ryan prefers anything I made to anything store bought. Andy constatnly asks "who made this". If we need something, "let's make it!" or "how do you make this?" They want to knit. I am not yet brave enough to give a 4yo and a 5yo a pair of pointy sticks each.

Then came the diapers... when I decided to use cloth, it wasn't a huge leap for me to consider sewing my own. IMy first discovery was that old towels and flannel reciving blankets can be sewn togehter to make a fantastic cloth wipe! now, since I had some laying around headed for the rag pile and I have a serger... I whiped up a few... dozen.. well 4 dozen.. FREE! RECYCLED! awsome as that is, they work better than store bought disposables! they really clean well. even if your 3yo pooped in his sleep and it is dried to his butt (yes that has happened.. more times than I care to discuss right now...) Next, I learned that those microfiber towels made for detailing your car (or boat - Dad swiped some from me...) are PERFECT for pocket diaper inserts! 1 towel=1 insert. I got some at Job Lot, 3/$2. then I find out that Costco has them 20/$10! Inserts run you about $3-5 + shipping typically. so I serged those into rectangles for inserts. Now I need a cloth liner for my diaper pail. I unearthed it - nice and clean with all the refills inside with an airfreshener! so, I'll use up what I have, but a cloth bag can get tossed in with the diapers. saves $, reduces waste AND reduces teh amount of times we need to touch dirty dipers to the actual changing part. after researching the fabric, it turns out that the best thing to use is the same stuff as you use for the diaper covers... so I ordered some for the liners. adn they had this REALLY cool one that looked like leather. how cute is a baby in a leather diaper?? I have 5yds of microflece from a project I abandoned so long ago, I can't remember what the heck I was going to make! then... I find a site with prints in this fabric! tie die! Nemo! frogs! firetrucks! you name it! HAD to have soem of that... so while I wait for my fabric in the mail, I look for patterns. free ones. I have some diapers, I can make a pattern if I need to. I found several that were almost what I want and leveral sites with instructions on assembly, so I'm starting to feel prepared adn then... DOLL DIAPERS! yup! a pattern for doll diapers! So I print it out, head for my fabric stash (imaginary pee & poo don't leak fortunately!) and I get ready to sew. now, doll dipes don't need to be particulary detailed or accurate, but I figured I'd use pocket diaper construction and include the elastics as well to practice for the real thing.and yeah.. I'm glad I did! that first one is a little sad. but I gotta say that Elmo looks rather adorable in that Cookie Monster diaper! I learned a few tricks I'll try next time, but I think the boys will have a good stash of doll diapers before I am confident enough to put the PUL near my serger! I had a friend that made her own several years ago, and I thought all that tofu had gone to her head! Now, well, it just makes sense!

When did they get so big???

seriously, when the hell did my babies grow up? Andy is reading. well.. a little anyway. and Ryan, well, he just looks SO big when he was playing with Jason the other night. UNREAL!

on the Fuzzi Bunz front... I just got my first "fluff" mail! woo hoo!! 6 Fuzzi Bunz! I have to play with them every time I go into the nursary (aka temporary sewing room). I've also made 4 dozen wipes from recycled fabric and 25 inserts from microfiber towels. you know- the ones you use for detailing your car.... We've also gotten some Happy Heinies prcket trainers for Ryan. they are the same fabric as the FBs, but pull on like underpants. I stuff them with the huge hemp inserts that can usually saok up the nightime flood waters. so he no longer wears diapers! no matter how many times we called them pull ups or underpants, Ryan insisted that they were diapers - he's no dummy! BUT he calls the HH's his nightime underwear and won't put on his jammies w/o them and he refuses to use the last few disposables....

oh- and just after I got the HHs and ordered the FBs, the freakin dryer died! the motor burned out (it's only 30+ yrs old!) and is now a fire hazzard... well it would be if it were still plugged in... BUT we are getting the new one today and they are carting off the old one. buh bye!

back to the sewing.. I made the curtains for both kids rooms and the high chair pad and now I'm making hte seat cushions for the kitchen!

almost doen with Ryans socks.. remember those? just need to BO and find another "traveling" project!

3.29.2006

It's another BOY!!

we had the BIG u/s this morning! we've got another tall, stubborn, healthy boy! I'll scan some pics whenever I get to a scanner....

looks like I odn't need to repaint the Nemo room afterall! actually, they make Nemo toddler bedding.. I think I may get that and sew the bumper and buy a plain white dust ruffle.

Baby Fuzzi Bunz

long time no blog.. Sorry.. Bad blogger... I repent...

before I get to explaining the title of this post, I have to take a little commercial break.. I found THE BEST fish-n-chips place EVER! Farley's Fish & Chips on Lenox ave in Milford - near the Devon PO. SOOOO GOOOOD!!!!

on to the warm Fuzzis! All my tree-squeezing, granola-crunching, eco-friendly friends will be very happy with me now! ( you know who you are! Put down your tofu and read on..)

after seeing first hand what modern cloth diapers look like and talking about the ups and downs of using cloth. I think we are going the cloth route this time! And before you go ordering me some organic granola.... I'm in it b/c it's cheap! Sure you've got to throw down a pretty penny to start, BUT you can resell on eBay for a good return and even if you don't it still adds up to less than disposibles. I'm going to make my own cloth wipes ( I think I can handle serging a piece of flannel and a piece of terry together!) and I'm going to sew cloth liners for my diaper dekor+ so that everything will just go in 1 wash! I tried to upload a pic of the Fuzzi Bunz, but blogger seems to be having "issues". (Never mind! I finally got it working!) you can click on the title to check 'em out. And while you're there.. I am registered.... just sayin'.... but, you can search for it under my email herself at snet dot net...

I already ordered some pocket trainers for Ryan. so we can rid ourselves of pull ups and hopefully speed up PTing - stubborn bugger! Poor kid isn't even the middle child yet and he's the guinea pig!

Belly Bean Update!

Had a checkup last night.. baby is doing good! I gained a whopping 1.25# - which was probably b/c I'd just eaten dinner! OK by me tho! the HB sounded GREAT and the baby was moving a LOT. She said it's going to be another active one, but I hope that is just b/c of all that sugar in my YUMMY mint milkshake. mmmmmm..... I think I may NEED another one!!!

anyway.. we scheduled the BIG u/s for march 29th, so we'll find out hte bean's flavor then.. Or at least that's our plan.. well.. Todd's really, but I'l go for the ride!

Olympic wrap-up

16 days
5 skeins of Chenille T&Q
1.5 pairs size 11 needles
1 size N hook
6 blue buttons....

and we end up with
1 3-6m dragon hoodie for my baby
1 12m dragon hoodie (gift! Already wrapped too!)
1 pair crochet booties to match dragon hoodie for my baby
3 premie hats for "Hugs & Stitches"

AND
1 GOLD MEDAL!!!

I'm glad I didn't flake out or buckle under pressure like SO many US athletes did.. Is it just me, or were a lot of them just phoning it in expecting to win?

2.17.2006

GOOOAAL!!!!!!!!!!!

I did it!!! Baby dragon is DONE! I CO baby dragon 2 for a gift. it was fun to knit, and a LOT easier than I thought! sweaters have really scared me.. dont' know why... maybe I'll have to actually make that sweater for myself. of course I won't be able to wear it until next fall/winter, so no hurry.... I'm going to try to get the second dragon done for the KO, but the ultimate deadline is 3/19.... must fix camera...

Note: I'm working on the pics Bear with me! I REALLY want to show this one off!

The Random Files

ok- very Random post today.... lots of things to catch up on...

First.. A little birdie told me I should be congratulating someone.... I swear it is NOT possible for me to be pregnant w/o someone I know getting knocked up too! at least it isn't a sister or SIL this time!

Second.. The stupid bridge!! does anyone else know what a PITA it is to have the drawbridge out of order on the weekends.. when I run my errands.. there are only 4 blocks adn a drawbridge between me, the grocery store and Joann's (the one that actually carries a good supply of yarn!) SO I've yet to buy food this week AND I ran out of yarn for my KO project! I went to the other joann's b/c they do have some yarn BUT not hte color I needed. not a total waste tho. I found buttons and orange slices (mmmm).

Third.. the KO progres report! Well, I didn't get off to a very good start. Todd called me on the way home and asked me to meet him at a friends house to get the boys. if I did that, we wouldn't get home unitl 6 or 6:30 and THEN I could start dinner. Not a huge deal for me, but if hte boys aren't fed by 6, they turn into Gremlins! SO, since my mom is only 10 minutes from the friend, we went over there for dinner. not much of an impediment to knitting EXCEPT that he called me AFTER he left the house where my knitting sat unloved and alone until 10! EIGHT hours after the KO began!!! I felt like I HAD to knit something.. so I pulled my "emergency sock" out of my purse and got a couple inches done on that, but that got me NO closer to the gold.. I did get a reprieve and some catch up time on Saturday tho. Todd's car went in for the 90k service, a new timing belt (it was due) and water pump (it was leaking.. so at least it was under warranty!). SO I was w/o car for several hours and had nothing better to do than knit. got the boys to bed early and knit. Sunday I shoveled and did some house work, but the boys went to bed early, so I sat in bed with the hoodie and ABC's Sunday line-up. About halfway through DH and the hood.. I RAN OUT OF YARN!!!! so I did the crochet spots in the CC and whip stitched them on. I sewed the buttons on, and wove in all of my ends. Now I need more yarn! all in all this is going a LOT faster than I anticipated... I may make another as a gift for my soon to be Godson. I won't promise getting it done BEFORE the torch goes out (he'll need a bigger size!.) .. but we'll see. double gold? I'll get MORE yarn tonight.. another problem is what to use to sew the side seams.. I'm thinking just a needle and thread....

Fourth.. It's a redneack blizzard! I decided that the storage container in my driveway with the old cabinets, panneling, dishwasher, and sink piled behind it weren't redneack enough, so I parked on my lawn YEE HAW!

2.10.2006

tick tock kathump kathump

I added a new ticker today for the KO! it is officially begun and I'm still here at work and not knitting :(

my appt went well yesterday. HB was good, placenta is already going strong. I lost 3#. for the first time ever in my life I got lectured about losing weight! she told me I can't do it again this month. how am I going to be able to eat more???? my u/s will be in 7 weeks. we'll schedule it when I go back in 4 weeks.

2.09.2006

OH baby!

I added a nifty little ticker to the top so everyone can see just how close we're getting! I really like this one b/c it actually shows the developing fetus.

I have my 12w appt tonight. we should be able to hear the HB for hte 1st time. I NEVER get tired of hearing that sound! I've got to dig out my copy of Mickey Hart's "Music to Be Born By" SOOOO relaxing! If you click the link, it'll take you to Amazon where not only can you order it, but you can listen to a little of it!

the other REALLY cool thing is that I felt a kick this morning! YAYAY!! it was so exciting! especially since it doesn't hurt...yet..

Ryan had his pre-k visit today. he'll start thursday, then they're off for a week. we could have waited until after the break, but why?

baby dragons

Some people have had a hard time finding the patterns I'm using for the KO. here is the basic sweater from LB:
http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/kts-816AD.html
and Here is Marnie's Dragon Hoodie Pattern
http://marniemaclean.com/patterns/Dragon/index.html

my changes:
  • LB has discontinued the Terryspun, so I am using CHenille T&Q - see PP for color swatches.
  • The basic sweater has SG sleeves and hood. I'm going to do tehm in St st but I'll continue the GS edging like the body.
  • Marnie's ears are knit seperately and tehn sewn on. I hate hand sewing. that is why I have 2 machines and a serger... I think I will pick up and knit the ears right to the hood. I think...
  • the spine is crocheted seperately and sewn on. I don't think so! I'll pick up the knit stitches and sc into them. no futzing with the length of the chain that way either.
  • spots are either intarsia or applique. real dilema for me here. I've never done colorwork, so this is an opportunity to try it out, BUT I'm on a schedule here. also the gauges are diferant for the 2 patters, so I can't use Marnie's chart. I could easily crochet round spots and whip stitch them on...
  • zipper or button? the LB has 1 button, Marnie's has a zipper. what do you think? I'm not crazy about just 1 button.. I may do 2 or 3...

Hooked

I've joined "Team Hooker" for the KO. no button as of yet :( I am clueless when It comes to making them, so I guess I can't complain too much... Team Hooker is made up of Crocheters who knit. Many knitters can crochet enough to do an edge, but not may crocheters will take the plunge into knitting. Crochet is faster - mroe instant gratification, but some things are just nicer knit.. IMO anyway..

on the baby front... Daddy has decided that we'll find out the sex at the next u/s. I'm 11w today and the u/s will be at about 18w. so for the next 7 weeks STOP ASKING! I will post (with pics!) when we know. I took the boys with me "window shopping" at "Babies for Us" you know the sister store to "Toys for Me". (side note: Andy saw the TRU sign as we went by on 95 and said "Mommy, what toy store is that?" I think he can read. he can also read "Dunkin Donuts" - Uncle Tommy must have taught him that one.. "Target", and "McDonalds" oh and he can read "Andy" and "Ryan" too!) I can NOT believe how expensive car seats have gotten in the last few years! Now that I'm over the sticker shock, I need to hit Consumer Reports. I looked at the Co-sleeper as well. I think it will work nicely for us. it is the size of a cradle, but more convenient and practical for bfing and it has pockets to keep diapering stuff nearby too. just don't be TOO shocked to see some yarn and hooks or needles poking out... I stash my WIPs next to my bed as it is... and yes, I CAN knit and nurse... what do you think the sling is for???

My kitchen is comming along slowly but surely! I'll have to track down a camera and post some pics. this blog is having some SERIOUS picture withdrawals!

Dawn Breaks over the Zoo!

So, I was watching the boys play last night (all 4: 2 furry, 2 not so furry) and I noticed a couple things. The cats are just like the kids! Seriously! Smokey is the cat incarnation of Ryan, and Z - the more timid crybaby CONSTANTLY asking for his brother is the cat-Andy. Then I remerked to Todd that Z's makrkings are just like smokey's but more of a contrast. "Z looks more like a zebra.", I said. and it clicked! That is what Robbie was trying to say when he named the cat Zeebinz. so translated from 3yo to english, the cats name would be Zebra! but he doesn't answer to that (or Batman or Spiderman...) so Zeebinz it is...

1.30.2006

Mom picked this up for me this weekend! THANKS MOM!! I really like this book so far. it has a few patterns, but the focus is on technique and LOTS of stitch patterns! We've already covered the topic of me and patterns... so this is SO sweet!

speaking of sweet.. we've adopted Smokey's brother, Zeebinz (I just made up the spelling. it is a made-up name from the mind of a 3yo...). they look a LOT alike and are having a lot of fun playing together. if he ever crawls out from under Ryan's bed, I'll have to take a picture...

1.25.2006

WIP Wednesday - revisited

Still no camera.. BUT I'll fill you all in on my current WIPs anyway...

1) DH's Damn sock are done! You've probably heard the cheers of joy. Not just from me either, but Todd was drooling over my shoulder the ENTIRE time I was knitting them....

2) Ryan has a sock! I'm waiting for a "yarn angel" to come through for me and send me some leftovers from the stash!

3) Swap #52 squares: 1 done+mailed, 6 done & needing envelopes, 1 OTN. YUP I'm knitting another one. Yes, I crochet faster, yes everyone else is crocheting, BUT I do need to practice my knitting, so I'm doing one in GS with a slipped stitch row every 4th row. I'm thinking about (GASP!) a cable on one!

4) Fuzzy Feet for Mom- these were her Christmas gift, but I was realistic (and VERY stressed!) and I gave her the pattern and told her I'd do it when I could. I finished the heels on Sunday and I'm working my way down the foot (7" to go...)

5) Super Secret Pattern for REALLY Cool book! I just got my contract, my "test" run is done and I need to type up the pattern in her template and find a freakin photo of me that I don't hate... Yeah.. That'll be easy! My yarn for the sample was sent from London a couple of days ago, so it may be a couple weeks before it arrives. It is a quick and fun crochet, so I should be able to turn it around quickly! The book is scheduled to be released in September, and I'll post more info as I get it. I can't wait for my copy! Yes, I get $, a copy of the book and I keep the sample once the promotion is done!!!

1.20.2006

My baby is officially a Pre-Schooler!

SNIFF.. He's all grown up ... sniff..

after all the arguing and fighting with the bitch from Pupil personnel, we finally got Ryan screened this morning! He is a "typical" child and he'll be placed in an integrated classroom. Like Andy's but with other 3yo's. So he'll go in the morning, I think 2 days a week. We've got a stack of papers to fill out tonight.. then he can start!
