Appearantly, some (male) doctor/researcher figured out that menstrual blood contains stem cells. His research poses the hypotheses that these stem cells may be useful somewhere in the future. Of course, some brilliant company has taken his research and run with it. I saw an ad online for it and assumed it was a scam.
Last night I got a card in in the mail from C'ELLE - aka the nut jobs collecting the menstrual blood. The parent company is the one we've banked Ryan's cord blood with (my dad was diagnosed with cancer for a second time in 5 years around the time I found out I was expecting. we decided it was worth the price of storage.) SO, yeah.. they are actually legit!
Curiosity got the best of me. I had to check out their web site. OY! go read the FAQ... you need to use a cup - similar to the Diva. BUT then you have to put the sample in a test tube and store it in the fridge until you are ready to ship.
So, how's that cup sounding now?

LOL...the collection kit comes with blood bags, absorbents, thick foam..as well as other things to keep the blood from spilling into the fridge. When I was born 40 years ago, there was no such thing as umbilical cord blood collection. Since my family history includes Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Cardiac disease, I am considering this service. I think it is exciting that they are finding sources of stem cells that are readily available without jumping into the whole political embryonic stem cell debate. More companies will follow... Cryocell is a huge company and they know what they are doing. And compared to umbilical cord blood storage, their price is cheap!

ReplyDeleteWhy aren't THEY PAYING WOMEN for this?!?!? I think it's a great idea - the menstrual blood truly is "holy" (for lack of a better word). Women are the only ones who have it. WHY are WOMEN PAYING MEN for this?!?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteWomen, we should be demanding that they pay us for this. I have studied this since 1997 - back then, my friend actually talked about creating a cup to store the blood.
I would love to hear your thoughts on my comment. I honestly cannot believe that women have to pay $200!! (supposedly a deal) for this....

I totally agree, they need a woman's menstrual blood yet she has to pay. That doesn't sound right at all.
